Battle of the Brass Bands

BAFTA Winning Audio Post Production
Sky Arts

A 5 part documentary series, following the stories of a number of bands as they prepared for, and took part in the annual Brass Banding competition scene. With locations ranging from remote village halls and open moorland to venues such as the Birmingham Symphony Hall and the Royal Albert Hall, this project provided unique audio challenges, given that the majority of the music to be used within the series would be recorded during production. Twofour Post provided all facilities and supported the production from inception through to delivery of the 5.1 mixed final shows.

Pre-production Planning

Support and advice on location music recording techniques to provide high quality music recordings, both in a single camera scenario and in large multi-camera shoots.

Production

Production staff were trained in the use of standalone audio equipment for music recording while on location. Added to this Twofour Post staff carried out sound recording work on critical shoot days, including extensive multitrack recordings in the larger venues to ensure that high quality media was available for the post production phase.

Post-production

Our audio team were able to work alongside the offline  to provide temporary music mixes to be used throughout the edit process. 5.1 music mixes were created ahead of finishing that could be incorporated into the final session.

The collaboration between the production team and Twofour Post from conception through to delivery of this project was key to the fact that it went on to win a Craft BAFTA for Best Sound – Factual upon broadcast, and was so well received by all the musicians involved.
